The term "designer baby" was originally derived from "designer clothing" and used pejoratively as implying commodification of children. A designer baby is defined as “a baby whose genetic make-up has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect, or to ensure that a particular gene is present”. Processes such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) are used to select gender, height, hair and eye color, and possibly intellectual and athletic ability. These methods can also be used to wipe out and eradicate diseases.
